Antler River Recreation Report

Hello and welcome to another report from Antler River Recreation. It has been a while since I have had a chance to submit a report for the Rec District so I thought I would get you up to date on everything that has been happening in the area!

Our Youth Rec Hockey Program in Pierson wrapped up for the year last week. We started the program back in November, and the kids skated every Tuesday from 4:30 – 5:30 at the Edward Sports Centre. There were 12 kids in the program this year. I was very happy to have help on the ice with coaches Bill Bird, Stephanie Halliday and Logan Lee this year, we wouldn’t be able to run the program without volunteers like them!

Pickleball and winter walking at Melita School has been running steady since November and will continue on until March 19. Everyone is welcome to come out for both of these programs, winter walking in the hallways of the school is free of charge and there is a $2 drop in fee for Pickleball. Free adult volleyball also continues to run in Waskada School Gym on Wednesday’s from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. If you are interested in this activity, all you have to do is show up and wear indoor shoes!

This year, we introduced a new program in Waskada called Baseball Fundamentals on Tuesday and Friday evenings. The course is coached by Jeff Smart and there are eight students participating. The program started in November and will be running into March.

Also, in Waskada this winter, there is a small group of people who meet at the school gym to fly remote control airplanes. These electric powered airplanes are made of a foamy material so they cannot do any damage when being flown indoors. The group meets at the school gym on Monday’s at 7:00 p.m., everyone is welcome to come out and give the planes a try – for more information on this program, you can contact James Shukin at 204-673-2207.

ARRD is currently running another Youth Bowling League at Galaxy Lanes in Melita. A group of 11 6-9 year-olds meet at the bowling alley on Wednesday’s from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. to play their games. We will likely be running another league in April, so keep watching our Facebook page, Instagram and website for more information.

On Friday’s in February, ARRD has been holding toddler programming at the PVAC Arts Studio. During these sessions, we have read stories, made crafts, painted on canvas and this week we are going to be doing science experiments!

On Sunday’s, until March 18, we are having an open gym time for your little ones! You can bring your young kids to Melita School Gym from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. to run around and burn off some energy. This is a free event to attend, but you must either wear sock feet or clean indoor shoes in the gym! We are very thankful that Ashley Tilbury has volunteered to run this program for the Rec Department.

We will be holding a Paint Night in Melita on Sunday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m. at the PVAC Arts Studio. The cost to participate is $20 and includes all supplies. Register with ARRD by February 27. If you would like to see the picture that we will be painting, check out our Facebook page.

Open badminton nights started at Pierson School Gym this week! This is a free program to attend and all you need to bring is clean indoor shoes and a badminton racquet (the Rec Department has a couple that you can use if you don’t have any), we will supply the birdies. Badminton nights are held on Tuesday’s from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. and all ages are welcome to come out!

Judy Gandza is coming out to Melita to hold a Meditation Workshop on Wednesday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m. at the Melita Anglican Church Parish Hall. Judy has been using meditation as a tool to help her in many of areas of her life for over the past 15 years. In that time, she has learned from several modalities and now incorporates those teachings into her own practice. She has guided and introduced meditation to large groups, as well as one-onone and observed how it can benefit both the mind and body. She will show you how easy meditation is... and you don’t have to know yoga or turn off your brain or sit cross-legged for hours or even minutes to do it. It’s as easy as 1-2-3...she promises! Judy’s main agenda in everything she engages is to empower others; to awaken their natural curiosity of greater possibilities. In this we can learn our inner truth, eliminate self-doubt, expand our sense of self. The life enhancing benefits of meditation are better sleep, more self confidence, more energy, improved immune system and an overall sense of happiness. Who doesn’t want more of that? The cost for this course is $20 and you must register by March 1. Includes a guided meditation that will be anywhere from 20-30 minutes long. If you want to lie down for the meditation, please bring something to lie down on such as a yoga matt.

ARRD is holding a Musical Theatre Spring Camp in Pierson this year. Rehearsals will be held on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. starting on March 19 and continuing until mid-May. Students may not have to attend every rehearsal – once roles are assigned, a rehearsal schedule will be given to each student. If we end up getting enough kids for this program and we are given the rights, we are hoping to perform “The Little Mermaid Jr.” at the end of May. Final performance date TBA. Rehearsal and performance space is also TBA, but will be in Pierson. Any youth aged 7 & up are welcome to register for this camp and the cost is $50 per person which helps to cover the costs of purchasing scripts and licensing fees. There are both singing and non-singing parts available in the musical and parts for both boys and girls! We encourage out of town students to register, we will wait for you to arrive at rehearsals.

Lastly, ARRD received a grant from PMH – Healthy Together Now to purchase snowshoes for our Recreation District. For a small fee (1 day rental $2, weekend rental $5), you can use these snowshoes! Snowshoes must be picked up during the week at the ARRD office (unless other arrangements can be made). Please call for availability and to arrange a pickup time.

If you are interested in any of the program listed above or have an idea for a new program, please contact the ARRD office at 204- 522-8328 or arrd@mymts. net. I will be attending a conference in Winnipeg from February 27 – March 2, so during this time the Rec office will be closed, but feel free to send me and email!
