The 30th Annual Southwest Match Play is being held June 16, 17 and 18 at the Townsend Valley Golf Club in Melita. The tournament begins with a shotgun start Friday morning at 9:00 a.m and will carry onto Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. a shotgun start, 3:00 p.m. is the qualifying round, and Sunday is a shotgun start for the golf matches. Spectators are welcome for the three horse races; which will consist of 30 golfers auctioned off during the day on Saturday at approximately 2:00 p.m.
30th Annual Southwest Match Play committee member, Darren Stewart said, “The weekend is run the same every year we have about 30 golfers qualify Friday morning and the rest Saturday morning, three horse races Saturday afternoon which the public is welcome to come and watch and of course enjoy a cold drink on a warm day and then everyone is flighted according to their qualifying round and the match play portion starts with a shotgun start 8:00 a.m. Sunday!”
The very successful tournament is a hot commodity with of 88 golfers participating this year and about 50 people are on the waiting list. Every year you are guaranteed your spot back in the tournament as long as you pay the entry fee by the due date!
“The weekend has really become like a reunion weekend of sorts with golfers coming from as far west as British Columbia, east as Toronto and south as Arizona - all with ties to friends and family here in the area!”
Stewart continued, “It starts with Thursday night with men’s night at the club and even a bus goes to Oak Island Friday morning with 30 or so golfers for the day for those who want to go! It really has become a great annual event.”
Every year the Annual Match Play tournament raises about $7,000 - $10,000 which is donated to the golf club for upgrades or projects. There are tons of sponsors that go into making this tournament the success it has been for 30 years!
