Reston Rockets win Senior A Provincials

The Reston Rockets qualified for the Baseball Manitoba Senior “A” Provincials in Clearwater August 10-12. The Senior “A” format is geared towards communities with a population of under 1000 people and for teams who finish in the lower half of their respective league standings. The Rockets played a Best of 3 series with Wawanesa prior to the provincials. After dropping the first game, the Rockets rebounded by winning the games 2 and 3 to win the SWBL seed for provincials. The Rockets added Kevin McNeil and Cole Kirkup from the Souris Cardinals as pickups for the tournament.

There were four teams attending the provincial tournament - Reston (SWBL rep), Clearwater (host & Border League), Ebb and Flow (Santa Clara League), and Wawanesa (Wildcard). The Rockets opened the tournament on Friday with Wawanesa. Tyson Roblin pitched a complete game shutout, as the Rockets defeated Wawanesa 10-0. Next up for the Rockets was Ebb and Flow on Saturday afternoon. The Rockets bats came alive early as they cruised to a 20-2 win. The Rockets final round game was Saturday night vs Clearwater. The Rockets dropped a 19-11 decision to the hosts to finish with a 2-1 record. However, that was good enough for 2nd place in the round robin and a spot in the final and a rematch with Clearwater.

Sunday’s final was a much different game than Saturday night. The Rockets scored in the first on a Clearwater throwing error. After trading runs over the next 2 innings, the Rockets scored an insurance run in the 6th. With the combination of strong defence and a complete game on the mound from John Patmore, the Rockets held on for a 3-1 victory to claim their first Senior “A” provincial title.

The Rockets would like to thank our fans & sponsors for this season. We had a great season and are proud to have capped it off with a provincial title. See you next season!!
