Melita & Area Health Auxiliary celebrates 65th Anniversary

A large crowd attended the Melita and Area Health Auxiliary 65the Anniversary Tea on Friday, November 1, 2019, in the Legion Hall basement. Mayor Bill Holden and Municipality of Two Borders Councillors Donna Brown and Sandra Clark were also in attendance and gave messages of congratulations. There was a table of memorabilia for patrons to browse as well as a list of many of the items and services provided by the Auxiliary for the past 65 years.

The anniversary cake was cut by Nelda Wilkinson. Nelda is the longest serving member of the Melita Health Auxiliary, while also being a long-time member of the once Bede-Bernice Auxiliary. For many years Nelda was the appointed representative from our Auxiliary to our local Hospital Board until the Regional Health Authority revised the parameters of the many health districts. She was the Coordinator for Ways and Means, Sick and Visiting and Public Relations Coordinator for many years. Now Nelda is our representative to the Handivan Committee. Nelda has given 65 years of dedicated service to our health facility!

President Ellen Carels gave a brief history of the Auxiliary and expanded upon a few current projects. The Auxiliary has received money from the disbanded Melita Health Inc. and this money will go toward $500 Bursaries for students who apply for help with their medical course expenses. Telehealth will receive just over $5,000 a year, for five years, to pay for the yearly costs of this service. The Auxiliary will be funding the costs for the security system camera and intercom for the locked front doors of the Hospital at night. This was felt to be a necessary item for the safety of our staff, residents and patients.

President Ellen Carels presented a $600 Scholarship to Delaney Elliott to go toward her expenses for her second year of medical studies.

Patrons enjoyed a lovely lunch of sandwiches and anniversary cake. Many took a chance on winning a few prizes. Door prize went to Connie Renwick. Handmade wooden plaques, donated by Aleta Gould, went to Judy Downey and Gloria Jasper. The Meal Hamper Basket and $25 Co-op gift card was won by Fran Dickinson. A second smaller hamper went to Judy Jones. The Party Pack Hamper and 4 tickets to the Strand Theatre was won by Florence Murray. The $50 bill went to Denise Teetaert. There was a tremendous amount of baking donated for purchase.

The Auxiliary is so fortunate to have a wonderful community who continues to support the Auxiliary so generously.
