Local Food Bank receives extra treats for Easter hampers

 We had a long winter, with many successful programs running throughout the District, but spring is finally here, and I am getting very excited to start announcing some new spring and summer programs with ARRD! Is there anything that you would be interested in seeing in the upcoming weeks? Let me know at the office – located at 101 Ash Street (Handi-Van office).

 Free adult volleyball continues to run in both Melita and Waskada. Melita’s is held on Wednesday evenings from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Melita School gym and Waskada’s is also held on Wednesday’s from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Waskada School gym. Please make sure to wear clean indoor shoes. There is no registration required for this program. The last day of volleyball in Melita will be on Wednesday, May15.

 Join Kathleen Lagasse of Lagasse’s Studio of Fine Art to learn the art of Dirty Pour on Monday, April 29, at the Waskada School MPR. This class costs $60 and all supplies are included. Please register for this course by April 26 by contacting the Rec office.

 Greg Steel will be back in Melita on May 4 & 5 for the Firearms Safety Course. The Canadian Firearms Safety Course will be held first on Saturday, May 4, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Melita Parish Hall and will cost $110. Anyone age 12+ can take this course. This is the course you are required to take to get your PAL. On Sunday, May 5, the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course will take place at the Melita Parish Hall from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and will cost $110. To take this course, you must be 18 years or older and you must have the CFSC or PAL. You take the CFSC on Saturday and register for the course on Sunday. You must also have a course report for CFSC or present a valid PAL to register for the course. If you decide to take the CFSC and CRFSC, the cost will be $160 for both. Please bring a lunch and photo ID to class with you. Registration and payment for the course is required by April 24.

 Spring Theatre Camp has been going well in Pierson. The kids are hard at work learning lines, songs and choreography to the Jungle Book Kids. The final performances for the production will take place on Friday, May 10, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, at 3:00 p.m., both at the Pierson Hall. No tickets are required, but there will be silver collection at the door.

 Make sure to mark your calendars for the Melita Town Wide Yard Sales on Saturday, June 1, from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.! Register your sale address and top three items with Antler River Recreation by May 22. There is no charge to register. Sale maps will be available starting on May 27 at melitamb.ca, arrd.ca, Rec office or at Chicken Chef. There will also be a bulk waste curbside pickup on Monday, June 3, (large appliances, furniture, mattresses, etc.).

 Back again this year is our Mother’s Day Tea Party! It will be held on Sunday, May 12, at 2:00 p.m. at the Melita Parish Hall. Join ARRD and Fun Time Pottery to enjoy snacks, tea and to paint a piece of pottery. There will be a selection of pottery items to choose from. The cost to attend is $25 per person. If just your kids wish to paint, you must still attend with them and there is a $5 fee for just the tea party. Everyone is welcome to attend. Registration and payment is due to ARRD by May 5.

 We will holding Girl’s Club in Melita and Pierson once again this year. We will also have a kids after school club in Waskada. Melita will be Tuesdays starting on May 14, Pierson Wednesdays starting on May 15, and Waskada Thursdays starting on May 16. Each session will run for six weeks and will be from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. and will be $45/participants. During the program the kids will get to do a variety of activities such as crafts, art, movies, Fun Time Pottery and more.
