The Melita and Area Economic Development Corporation (EDC) organized a 1-day training, Create and Maximize Your Facebook Business Page, on April 24, with Charles Tweed, owner of Tweedia, as the facilitator. A total of 17 participants registered for the workshop. This was co-presented by Community Futures Westman, sponsored by the Province of Manitoba, RBC Melita Branch and supported by the Town of Melita.
One of the attendees was Yasemin Keeler from Turtle Mountain Conservation District. She said everything about the workshop was beneficial. “Charles was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot about the inner workings of Facebook and how to better utilize it for our own organization.”
The social media training is part of the Melita and Area EDC’s Community Empowerment Workshops in 2019. The next one is scheduled for Thursday, June 6, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Melita Legion Hall. The session is called Introduction to Community Economic Development. This will be facilitated Dan Fontaine from the Economic Developers Association of Manitoba. This workshop is for community leaders, Council members, CAOs and Economic Development Officers.
The Melita and Area EDC was established in 1997. Started out as a business loan provider in conjunction with the provincial government’s program at the time. The organization’s mission is to promote and enhance economic development and job creation in the Town of Melita and surrounding area by fostering, promoting, and implementing economic and tourism development initiatives within Melita and area. The five strategic priorities we plan to focus on are:
- Retaining vital services and businesses
- Developing a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem
- Identifying, attracting and developing specific industries
- Attracting and retaining population
- Developing tourism in the area
