Communiplex and Enns Brothers auction fundraiser raises close to $135,000

The Melita & Area Communiplex Committee and Enns Brothers held a Community Appreciation and Auction at the Melita Legion Hall on Saturday, March 16. The Committee started planning for this event last year when Enns Brothers approached them with the idea of auctioning off the use of farm equipment, with the proceeds going towards the Communiplex project, in exchange for naming rights of the facility. When Brayden Lesy, Enns Brothers Melita Branch Manager, was asked how they came up with the idea of the auction and why they choose to work with the Communiplex Committee, he responded, “Our Senior Management Team has a discussion about how they could get creative with the contribution and create something that would let our producers get something in return for their donation to the project. This project was chosen as Enns Brothers has always believed in giving back to the communities in which they conduct business in. Being “Rooted In the Community” is a guiding principle when it comes to how Enns Brother operated and builds relationships and the Melita Communiplex project is exactly they type of initiative that gives life to rural communities, so it was an easy choice”.

The evening started out with a happy hour from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., followed by a free barbecue supper at 6:30 p.m. with hot dogs, hamburgers, macaroni salad, chips, cookies and drinks. Also taking place at this time was a variety of kids activities. Kids were able to enjoy a crafting and colouring table as well as some fun bean bag throwing games. During supper hour, the crowd was entertained by country singer Ryan Keown. After supper, Communiplex Chair Glenn Vercaigne and Project Manager Darcy Wilkinson thanked the crowd for coming and for all the support that they have shown throughout the years of fundraising for the project. Wilkinson then gave a quick update on the current status of the project reporting the steel frame has be installed and the siding on the new addition is being put in place. Next will be a new roof over the existing building and the new addition.

MC Kurt Ardron got everyone ready for the bidding to start on the auction portion of the evening. There were many different prizes donated for the auction, 30 in total, including a fire proof gun safe, fireplace, Winnipeg Jets tickets, Melita Golf Course membership, bags of canola seed, gift cards and so much more! The big auction items of the night were the use of three pieces of farm equipment for the 2019 season donated by Enns Brothers including a sprayer for 150 engine hours, tractor for 250 engine hours and combine for 150 separator hours. After the auction was finished, almost $135,000 was raised for the Melita & Area Communiplex Committee Project. The Committee was very thankful to Taylor Auctions, Fraser Auctions and Next Lot who all donated their time and services to the auction, and also provided online bidding for the evening!

Lesy commented, “We are extremely pleased with the auction results and how much we were able to raise. The support this area has given this project from the very beginning has been phenomenal and this event was another great example of how amazing our community is. Of course we learned a few things along the way that will certainly help us execute a successful event next year when we auction off the same three pieces of equipment for the 2020 growing season. The evening seemed to be well received. The auction was exciting and the entertainment was great”.

The evening concluded with another set of music by Ryan Keown and visiting by those in attendance. Keep watching the Melita & Area Communiplex Committee page for more information on the next auction in 2020.
